In June 2026, the European Union (the EU) accepted new rules that
bolster existing laws. More specifically, they extend the concepts of reuse and
recycling to motor vehicles, covering design, materials, assembly and dismantling,
and end-of-life practices.
On the upside, this means:
ü Built-in protection
of the environment
ü Compulsory recycling
of materials and vehicle parts
ü Greater
transparency for consumers
ü Strengthening regulatory
oversight and supervision
ü Stricter rules
for exporting beyond the borders of the EU.
On the downside, this means:
ü Older vehicles that
do not meet the new standards must be destroyed, even if in working condition
ü Vulnerable
consumers could suffer financially from the forced the destruction of vehicles
ü Loss of jobs in
the automotive repair sector
ü Loss of export
opportunities and revenue.
The circular plan for the motor vehicle industry will need a few years
for the benefits to be realized globally.
